CBD Terms You Need to Know

We totally get it – you’re browsing CBD products trying to find the right one, but all the technical terminology has you wondering if you’re making the best decision. But just know that at some point, all CBD enthusiasts were novices – even us folks at Apis Mercantile! These key CBD terms seem a little scary on the surface, but once you master them, you’ll be picking out CBD products like a pro.

Full-spectrum CBD

Did you know? There are over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis! Maybe you’ve heard of the most popular cannabinoid, THC. But CBD is a cannabinoid too; its full name is actually cannabidiol. When a CBD product is labeled as full spectrum, it means the product contains a broad range of those 100-ish cannabinoids, which sometimes includes a trace amount of THC.

With a full-spectrum CBD product, the cannabinoids work together to interact with different parts of your endocannabinoid system. This makes it easy for the CBD to help simultaneously alter a variety of psychological process including appetite, anxiety, stress and even depression. Isolate CBD

Whereas full-spectrum CBD products contain a range of cannabinoids, isolate products zero in one just one cannabinoid: cannabidiol, aka CBD. While isolate CBD doesn’t light up a number of points throughout the endocannabinoid system, fans of isolate products say it still targets a few areas, although not nearly as many as full-spectrum products. Since CBD isolate contains only cannabidiol, it’s perfect for people who choose to completely avoid other cannabinoids, like THC.


Non-psychoactive

It’s true: full-spectrum CBD products contain a trace amount of THC. But the amount of THC in full-spectrum products is so minuscule that it’s non-psychoactive, meaning it does not produce the same “high” that people experience from marijuana use. In fact, CBD actually counteracts THC’s effects. THC is just a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the plant, and many companies choose not to remove it because THC extraction methods are still questionable and, in some cases, can be toxic.

MCT oil

You may have noticed that our non-psychoactive, full-spectrum CBD tincture contains MCT oil – what’s the deal with that? MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, and it’s just a fat found in plants like coconuts. Fat acts as a carrier to get CBD into your cell tissue more quickly than just consuming CBD on its own. MCT oil also aids with overall absorption of CBD – it can actually double the rate at which your body absorbs CBD!
