The Endocannabinoid System

It’s no secret that we are experiencing a “green rush” in the United States as the hemp industry continues to evolve and more applications for cannabis derived products are discovered.  This rapid growth and expansion has caused increased scientific study in the cannabis field. Discovered as a result of studying cannabis, the endocannabinoid system describes the interaction in the body between naturally occurring neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors.  Endocannabinoids are simply endogenous, meaning having an internal origin, cannabinoids. While endocannabinoids occur naturally in the body, cannabinoids can be found in found in different plants including rosemary, hops, and, most famously, cannabis.

While there are over 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis, THC is perhaps the most famous.  Recently, CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, has started to gain more recognition as a cannabinoid lauded for its anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory properties.  Derived from hemp, which contains less than .3% THC, CBD has become a mainstream product that people are incorporating into their daily routines to find symptomatic relief.  While more studies are needed, some research has linked arthritis, IBS and other gastrointestinal issues, migraines, and even depression with lower levels of naturally occurring endocannabinoids.

The implications of the early research into the endocannabinoid system warrants serious discussion about the applications of CBD and other cannabinoids in treating common ailments.  On June 25, 2018, the FDA ushered in a new era for CBD when it approved the first medication, Epidiolex, to contain cannabidiol (CBD). States like Virginia are also coming around to the potential of cannabinoids as a treatment; This year, the Virginia Governor signed a law allowing for medical doctors to recommend CBD to their patients.
